Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta

Indonesia has proven to be one of the most interesting emerging markets in the world with over 240 million inhabitants and a fast growing economy of 5% annual GDP growth. In addition, the Malaysian government has health care as one of the prioritized sectors in the growth plan of the next 10 years, targeting to annually 1 million health travelers. Given the demand of a rapid development of the health care sector in both countries, Swecare Foundation together with the Swedish Trade Council and the Swedish Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta arranged a delegation headed by the Minister for Health and Social Affairs Mr. Göran Hägglund.

The delegation was very successful and the Swedish delegation came back home with business opportunities as well as enjoyable memories in the luggage. In Indonesia the Siloam Hospital in Karawaci bought a Gamma Knife. “We will be the first among Southeast Asian countries to have the most effective tool to treat cancer,” said Mr. Mochtar Riady, Chairman and founder of Lippo Group, owner of the Silolam Hospital, to the local newspaper Jakarta Globe. Mr. Mochtar Riady met with Minister Göran Hägglund and discussed future challenges within health- and cancer care. Johan Wikander, CEO of Scandinavian Quality Care signed a memorandum of understanding with Pertamina Medika in Indonesia. Read more about the activities below.

Malaysia
The Swedish delegation was greeted with a welcome dinner together with Area Manager ASEAN region from the Swedish Trade Council, Mr. Håkan Nylander by whom the delegates were given a briefing of the upcoming activities. The following day started with a kick-off breakfast together with the Minister for Health and Social Affairs, Mr. Göran Hägglund and Ambassador Per-Arne Hjelmborn. Thereafter the Malaysian Industrial Development Agency (MIDA) presented what services the agency offers for companies interested in doing business in Malaysia. The meeting gave the delegates useful information for future investments. Thereafter the delegation went visiting the Medical Device Bureau at the Malaysian Ministry of Health. Minister Göran Hägglund introduced the Swedish delegation for the Malaysian Minister of Health, Mr. Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai over lunch at the Ministry. In the afternoon the delegation paid a study visit to Prince Court Hospital and the National Heart Institute (IJN). The visits gave a good input to the operations and generated useful business contacts. The participants presented their company and further discuss possible interaction points between Swedish and Malaysian health care during an afternoon seminar. This was followed by dinner at the Swedish Residence hosted by the Ambassador Mr. Per-Arne Hjelmborn. A number of key representatives from Malaysian health care attended.

Indonesia
The program in Jakarta was kicked-off by an informal lunch with briefing with Ambassador Ewa Pollano and Head of Swedish Trade Council Indonesia, Mr. Erik Milfors. Thereafter Minister Göran Hägglund introduced the Swedish delegation to Mrs. Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, Indonesian Minister for Health. The delegation was introduced to the regulations regarding foreign health care goods in Indonesia. Thereafter the delegation paid a study visit to the public teaching hospital RSCM Hospital where they met with the management. The visit gave good contacts and was very much appreciated by the delegation.

The following day began with a seminar focusing on “The Future of Health Care”. Minister Göran Hägglund presented the Swedish health care and the Symbiocare concept. Acting president of Swecare, Mr. Christer Andersson presented the Swedish health care system followed by a presentation on the  new Swedish university hospital, New Karolinska Solna (NKS). The CEO Mr. Lennart Persson, together with Charlotte Ruben from White Architects presented the thoughts and ideas behind NKS. The participants discussed different aspects concerning the future of health care in three different session groups. The seminar resulted in interesting knowledge exchange. After a networking luncheon the delegation paid a visit to Siloam Hospital Lippo Village where Minister Göran Hägglund and the Swedish delegation got a tour of the hospital by the chairman and founder Mr. Mochtar Riady. In the evening a reception was held at the Amassador’s residence which was attended by high officials and various guests from the Indonesian business community. Host for the event was the Ambassador of Sweden to Indonesia, Ms. Ewa Pollano.

The last day of the trip began with a networking breakfast at the Pertamedica headoffice. Thereafter business meetings, presentations and cultural events took place. In the afternoon the delegation paid a study visits to the Pertamedika Hospital. The activities were very much appreciated by the participants and gave good opportunities to tie business contacts with key stakeholders within Indonesian health care.
